Our history

2016
The journey began with intensive research in Europe, focusing on the recovery of electronic and battery waste. The experience gained from handling these materials revealed significant unrealised value in the recovery of battery components. The primary research goal was to develop the most efficient process for reclaiming valuable materials from used batteries.
2019
By early 2019, the efforts bore fruit as the recovery and production process was successfully proven under laboratory conditions. The summer of 2019 marked the beginning of the commercialisation phase, where the concept was put to the test in real-world applications.
2020
The year 2020 was pivotal, with the completion of successful commercial pilot projects. This milestone included the establishment of the first operational and commercial plant facility, marking the transition from concept to operational reality.
2022
In 2022, the business attracted a new seed investor, leading to a significant restructuring. The company was re-established as USA Inc. and acquired the combined lithium-ion battery materials recovery technology. This technology was rebranded under the name Storm Energia, reflecting a new chapter in the company’s evolution.
2023
The business completed its strategic move from Europe to the USA, establishing a multi-plant footprint. Resources poured into Research & Development, Technical Enhancements with focused enhancements to our processes and technologies to give birth to our Generation 2 plants were completed.
2024
The site for the first plant and future headquarters was identified (Detroit, Michigan), with the focus on moving new plant equipment while completing zoning and permitting works for the site. Additionally, completion of evaluations for a second site, supporting our growth ambitions.
2025
The commissioning of the flagship facility in Detroit, Michigan, in Q1 2025, marking a significant achievement. This year will also see the onboarding of new investors and the ramp up on operational capacity internationally – representing the company’s commitment to innovation and sustainable energy solutions.

Market Context

The global battery recycling market is on a meteoric rise. In 2023, it was estimated at USD 1.83 billion, and it’s projected to grow at a staggering compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 37.6% from 2024 to 2030.

Why? Let’s dive into the details:

Electric Vehicle (EV) Boom

The surge in electric vehicles is a game-changer. Lithium-ion batteries power these eco-friendly cars and recycling them is essential. It’s not just about being green; it’s about securing a sustainable future.

Renewable Energy Storage

As renewable energy adoption skyrockets, so does the need for energy storage systems. Batteries play a pivotal role, and recycling ensures a circular economy. Imagine turning yesterday’s EV battery into tomorrow’s solar backup!
